    36' John Alden Downeast Cruiser - SOLD

    Custom Built in Hull, Massachusetts in 1963 to plans and specifications by the John Alden & Company, design No. 929B. The "Susan" is a tribute to her designers and builder, not to mention two rather important refits over the past 21 years by her current owner. This Downeast Cruiser has been continually upgraded and maintained since 1994, nearly always stored inside her own boathouse.

    Construction

    This is a full keel downeast style boat. The Construction method is "Cold Molded composite with double diagonal planking on white oak frames, finished in fiberglass and West System epoxy on the exterior for same maintenance as solid fiberglass boats. This method of construction is very strong and durable and provides a level of insulation in the hull as well.

    Exterior paints are Petit and Epifanes epoxy base finishes. Decks are marine plywood with fiberglass over. Cabin sides and trunk are 1 1/4" Mahogany with epoxy and paint over. Cabin tops are marine plywood with fiberglass and epoxy over. Toe rail is Mahogany, finished out in epoxy and Petit paint. All finishes are durable and long lasting. All finishes are new in 2015. The keel is laminated white oak with 600 lbs of external lead ballast. There is another 900 lbs of lead ballast stowed inside.



    Deck hardware is all oversized and well designed cast bronze with everything through bolted.



    Anchors

    45# CQR with 200' of 3/8ths BBB galv. chain on starboard roller

    25# Danforth High Tensile with chain and 5/8ths Nylon on port roller

    35# Bruce anchor mounted in the cockpit with chain / rope rode stowed under the deck via hose pipe.

    55# Plow Anchor spare will go with the boat



    In the original refit of 1994 / 1995 all systems were replaced or rebuilt. New Bomar hatches were installed. An anchor platform with double stainless bow rollers were fitted to work with a heady duty manual bronze windlass with rope and chain capability.



    Exterior and Interior finishes all new in 2015



    Deck Arrangement

    Spacious side decks with non-skid coating leading forward with handrails and stainless life lines.

    New heavy duty Oak anchor platform (new in 2015) with epoxy and fiberglass over.

    Double stainless bow rollers welded together on a stainless platform.

    A heavy duty manual bronze windlass easily handles the 200' chain rode.

    Saltwater washdown fitting for hose on deck, and high pressure pump

    Built in seat in the stern with storage under. Propane storage box for two 20 lb bottles. Ladder up to the flying bridge. Double doors open into the salon.



    Flying Bridge with seating for 4 persons. Flying bridge was built new in 2015, and is ready to finish out with steering and electronics.



    Interior Layout & Accommodations for a family of six - there is a raised V Berth cabin forward of approx. 6-6 long by 6-0 wide. Bomar hatch over head, opening port forward with screen, and sliding windows port and starboard. Next aft to port is a convertible dinette with galley opposite. The dinette drops and converts to a double berth. Again, lots of sliding windows for great ventilation. All trunk cabin window frames and glass new in 2015. Galley has good counter space and many drawers for storage, double stainless sink with hot and cold pressure water, high neck faucet. Well insulated icebox with shelf. Tasco 3 burner propane stainless stove with oven, unit is gimballed or stationary.To starboard a stainless steel 3 burner stove with oven, counters and double stainless sink with hot and cold pressure water. There is also a salt water spigot with foot pump to conserve fresh water. Large insulated ice chest with top access and shelf for ice blocks.



    Next aft and to port, a fully enclosed head with marine toilet to MSD III compliance, separate shower stall, cabinet, sink and lighting. Sliding window in the head in addition to passive ventilation.



    Up 2 steps to the main cabin or salon, or saloon, your preference. The triple layout windshield provides excellent visibility, with 3 wiper motors. There is a 7-0 settee to port which could be converted into a pull out double. It has compartment storage under. All overhead finish is V match select yellow pine with varnish, adding a beautiful level of warmth to the off-white interior finish, and mahogany helm. All cabin tops are insulated with 1.5" BlueBoard. Cabin sole is painted Grand Banks Beige. With her original helm and spoked wheel, bronze fittings, oil lamps, the interior is both bright and airy, and wonderfully comfortable feeling.



    Marine Head - to holding tank with alarm, type III MSD (means pump head directly overboard or direct to holding tank or tank to overboard or tank to pump out) hoses are high quality "Shields" non-permeable to smell. Vented loop system.



    Ventilation - Dorade boxes on deck provide ample intake or exhaust air, air vents in galley and head, all port and side windows are sliding, port light forward with screen.

    Interior corner vents, vent the engine space. Anchor locker is vented through the windlass openings. Cockpit locker is vented.



    Tanks

    Fuel Tanks - 1/4" Aluminum tanks, 50 gals each side, new in 1998.

    Stainless steel water tanks 20 gals each side, fiberglassed in 1998

    Water heater stainless steel 6 gal, new in 1998

    Grey water holding tank in bilge for shower and sink, with float switch and pump.

    All plumbing hoses were replace with good quality hose in 1995 to 2000

    Fuel system - fuel tanks are new 1/4 inch aluminum in 98, 50 gallons each side with new stainless fittings and plumbing. Fuel filter is Racor, fuel lines were new and sleeved 1998



    Electrical - all new marine grade wiring in 1995, at that time a new 12 volt DC breaker panel was installed with 20 breakers.

    Two 8D batteries, 1 replaced in 2015, Balmar high output alternator 100 amps

    2 large solar panels mounted on cabin top in front of windshield, automatic battery charging.



    Electronics - VHF, combination Plotter, Speed, Depth, Ritchie compass, spare Danforth compass original to the boat. Raytheon radar 20XX, rudder angle indicator.



    Cabin lighting - well positioned overhead lights and wall mounted reading lights.



    Propulsion - Ford Lehman diesel engine rebuilt by Banks Brothers, Belfast, Maine about 1992, only 1600 hours since commissioned in 1995 by present owner. Always well maintained.

    Fuel injection pump was rebuilt in 1999

    New engine stop switch in 2015.

    New starter in past few years, new spare starter on board.

    Transmission 2:1 reduction, rebuilt 1994.

    New stainless driveshaft 1 1/2" about 2003.

    Drive saver installed.

    Cutlass bearing in good condition.

    Solid bronze rudder on stainless 1 1/2" rudder post.

    Propeller is 3 bladed bronze, reconditioned and balanced 199

    Exhaust system, new exhaust Riser, exhaust hose, muffler, stern fitting and clamps installed new in 1995, condition of all is very good.

    Stainless steel cage protecting the propeller for cruising in Maine without cutting lobster trap lines.

    Speeds - 7.5 knots cruise at 1 1/2 gph or less. 8 knot cruise easily, Max speed 9 knots



    Cabin Heating - dual bus cabin heater from engine fresh water side, and propane wall mounted cabin heater in the salon.



    Propane system added, all lines sleeved. Propane tank box in cockpit is self vented. Tasco full oven with three burners in galley and a Force 10 9000 btu heater in salon. Automatic shutoff comes with boat but not installed yet.



    Spars - 12' mast with spreaders and boom mounted at the aft end of cabin top with stainless rigging, new in 2015. Ready to rig a riding sail.
