    42' Downeast Cruiser - SOLD

Built by Billings at Stonington Deer Isle Yacht Basin in 1949. Explorer was heavily built for the Maine Marine Patrol and served in that capacity into the 1970's. After a number of owners she was acquired by Samples Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, Maine where she received new work from 2002 to 2004 to include a complete rebuild of the transom, refastening below the waterline, new trunk cabin top with exposed oak beams.

From 2005 until the present her current owner has repowered with a rebuilt Detroit 471 and rebuilt transmission. All of the following are NEW - All new engine wiring, plumbing and guages, new wet exhaust and muffler, new
dip style aluminum fuel tanks, new fuel hoses, Racor filters. New steering system to include ram and hoses. New propeller and drive shaft and drive saver, new cutlass bearing. Rudder post and bearings. New bronze sea water strainer and hoses, new starter

The main cabin was substantially rebuilt with new side walls and back wall. New aluminum windows on sides with some opening with screens. New back door to aft deck, and new windows in back wall. All providing excellent visibility. New cabin top with exposed oak beams. All decks fiberglassed with epoxy using a cloth that resembles canvas and has excellent non skid properties.

New oak anchor platform with double stainless rollers, new electric windlass with all chain rode. New CQR and Danforth anchors. New custom mooring bit.

New cockpit framing and deck with fiberglass finish over. Commercial aluminum and stainless hatches provide access to the under deck areas, steering and lead ballast of about 600 lbs.

About 2010 the forefoot was replaced and replanking on the bow below the water line was accomplished.

Previous owner invested over $200,000. over the past 10 years in major refit and repower.

Explorer is a flush deck cruiser with a substantial amount of space, galley down to port with opening hatch overhead, head with sink and toilet to stbd with ability to have a shower in that same space. 4 bunks in the fore peak with opening hatch overhead to fore deck. At present the main cabin is wide open for the new owner to design and finish as they wish. This is a prime opportunity to move the galley up into the main cabin and turn the lower cabin into a master owner's suite with centerline berth, separate shower and head, and room left over for hanging lockers. In addition there are 4 bronze portlights that open into the forward cabin for ventilation and light.
New interior oak paneling on side walls. New propane stove and oven.

The cockpit is substantial, side decks are about hip high, the transom has a wide deck ample for sitting on. In there corners are heavy oak towing bits. Railings on the outside are stainless steel.

Electronics include a Raytheon plotter radar combination, depth sounder, VHF.

New Electrical panels with DC breakers, new battery switch with 2/0 battery wiring. New batteries and boxes with covers. New high output Balmar alternator 105 Amp. All very professionally installed.

All of the above and much much more was accomplished by marine professionals at significant expense.

The investment into Explorer since 2002 exceeds $200,000. Owner is willing to sacrifice at a fraction of his cost to a buyer that will appreciate his valuable investment in this classic Maine boat.

Explorer is ready for her next phase of life, ready for your ideas and input to bring her to the next level of finish that was never imagined for her originally. Photos range from 2004 to the present.

We believe this would make a great 6 Pack passenger boat, large cockpit and large cabin, galley, bunks and enclosed head.

Highly recommended by listing broker who knows the boat very well.

Hull just surveyed by Jon Moore of Southwest Harbor, the vessel is in remarkably good condition, bronze fastenings were pulled and inspected, and are in good condition.

Bottom stripped of paint and repainted.

Bottom caulking was completely reefed out and re-caulked by master shipwright Jim Parker of St. George, Maine. This was just completed in Dec. 2015. There is some minor work on bottom to finish up.

    Price $29,500. Firm

Do not miss this opportunity. This is a really good boat.
