Designer Background - Carl Lane

Carl Lane was a respected Maine boat designer associated with Penobscot Boat Works in Rockport, Maine, builder of the well-known Penbo series of trawler-style cruising boats during the 1960s and early 1970s. Working with his brother Bob Lane, he developed a line of practical cruising yachts inspired by Maine commercial workboats, emphasizing seaworthy hull forms, economical operation, and simple, functional layouts.

Penbo boats gained a reputation for their solid wooden construction and dependable performance, and many remain in service today as classic Downeast cruisers. The Penbo designs are recognized for blending traditional Maine boatbuilding with comfortable coastal cruising capability.

36' Penbo Pilot House Cruiser 1963 For Sale - Crusader 330 HP

SCARLET is one of those classic Maine boats that draws people in wherever she ties up. She's a traditional Penbo 36, built the right way with white oak frames, Douglas fir planking, and teak trim that's weathered naturally over the years.

A thoughtful interior refit by respected Maine shipwright Tom Townsend moved the galley up into the wheelhouse and opened the aft bulkhead, making the space far more social and practical. Instead of being tucked away below, the cook stays part of the conversation. The result is a comfortable, open layout that works just as well for a quiet morning coffee as it does for an evening tied up with friends under the cockpit canopy.

Below, the cabin has a warm, traditional feel with classic wood joinery. A small wood-burning stove keeps things cozy in the shoulder seasons, making the boat comfortable well into spring and late fall. The layout includes a forward V-berth, additional bunks, a proper head, and an open galley arrangement--plenty of space for cruising with family or guests.

SCARLET also carries some interesting history. She was once owned by Tom Townsend himself and earlier served as the tender to the America's Cup challenger Nefertiti, when she went by the name King Tut III.

Power comes from a Crusader 305 gas V8 installed in 2005. The gasoline engine provides a smooth and relatively quiet ride compared with many traditional diesel installations. A steadying sail on the mast helps reduce roll while underway, and the solar panel system provides enough electrical independence for extended time away from the dock. Heavy-duty davits are also installed for carrying a small tender.

This Penbo has even received attention in WoodenBoat Magazine, appearing in issues 161 and 269.

Contact us for additional details or to arrange a personal inspection of SCARLET, currently stored with a custom frame and cover in Spruce Head, Maine. The vessel will be uncovered for seasonal fitting out in early April and launched in late May for her summer mooring in Port Clyde, Maine. Prospective buyers will have the opportunity to meet the owners and hear firsthand the history of this beautifully restored Carl Lane-designed Penbo classic.
