The South Shore 34 is a traditional Maine skeg-built Downeast lobster boat designed by Calvin Beal, reflecting the Beals Island and Jonesport boatbuilding tradition. The hull features a relatively flat running surface aft, with a sharp transition where the bottom meets the keel, characteristic of skeg-built construction. With a 12' beam, the South Shore 34 differs from the wider 13' Calvin Beal 34 hull. Its efficient skeg-built design provides good carrying capacity, reduced drag and strong performance with moderate horsepower. This 1989 example was repowered with a Cummins QSB 315 HP diesel and received a new wheelhouse in 2016. Equipped for commercial lobstering, she reportedly cruises at 15-16 knots with the cage on.
