35' Intrepid Sloop - McCurdy & Rhodes - Built by Cape Dory - SOLD
The boat is hull number one of the five Intrepid 35s built in the USA. The designer's son has owned one of these five since new. In the early nineties, the Cruising Club of America published a book, which recommended this design for shorthanded offshore sailing (the information on the above web page is from the book). As I was interested in short handed coastal cruising, I sought out this particular boat.
I?ve sailed the boat extensively between the Bras d? Or Lakes and Chesapeake Bay and found it to be one of the most stable, sea kindly designs I have ever sailed. For instance, I sailed the boat single-handed twice from Chesapeake Bay to Maine before it had autopilot. The boat will sail on any point of sail (including directly downwind!) with the wheel tied down. It is really rather extraordinary in that regard.
One of the best boat yards on the Chesapeake did extensive upgrades the year I bought it. They Awlgripped the hull and spars, reinforced the floor timbers and replaced the sole. They replaced all the standing rigging and did some other work. The next year (1998) I had a new suit of sails made and put in GPS, autopilot, radar, shore power and a battery charger. And in 1999 a very skilled woodworker installed an ash headliner and interior hull covering that makes the interior of the boat seem to be that of a high end custom built yacht.
Finally, it should be said that this is a very good looking boat and gets compliments all the time. Being a McCurdy & Rhodes design, it looks like a smaller version of the Hinckley Sou?wester 42. It has the same sheer line.
