THE STORY -- Origins of the Northern Bay 38 Design

In August 2001, Dutch boat builder Perry Kuiper came to Maine looking for a design to build a fast lobster boat in the Netherlands. While attending the Lobster Boat Races in Searsport, Maine, he met Keith Otis of Otis Enterprises Marine Corporation (OEM) in Searsport, who introduced him to John Hutchins of Downeast Boats & Composites in Penobscot, Maine. A few days later, John and Perry met to review a lines drawing for a 38′ design by Thomas Bernardi Jr., which became the starting point for what would evolve into the fast and efficient Northern Bay 38.

Perry Kuiper and John Hutchins moved forward in 2001, combining their efforts in the development of the Northern Bay 38. They engaged C.W. Paine Marine Architects of Camden, Maine, to refine Bernardi's design, optimizing its form and performance, and to produce build-ready AutoCAD drawings for production of the molds in Europe.

The original Northern Bay 38 plug and hull molds were built in the Netherlands by Perry Kuiper, who made the sole investment and personally carried out the development work using the refined AutoCAD drawings from C.W. Paine. To begin production, Kuiper constructed a full-scale plug - the precisely shaped master vessel form used to create the female production mold - and further refined the hull design during its fairing and finishing. From this master plug, he produced the original production molds and completed the first Northern Bay 38 hull. John Hutchins, from Penobscot, Maine, visited the site during construction and advised Kuiper on Downeast building methods and practical details, lending his Maine fiberglass boatbuilding experience to the project. The collaboration combined Hutchins' proven construction knowledge with Kuiper's craftsmanship and investment, bringing the 38′ Northern Bay to life.

A second set of molds was later fabricated in the United States by John Hutchins, who went on to lay up approximately 60 hulls for other finishers, but he personally completed and launched the final Northern Bay 38, Zophia, a beautifully finished Downeast sportfish built at Downeast Boats & Composites in Penobscot, Maine.

Perry Kuiper also laid up an additional seven finished boats in the Netherland and seven hulls in Maine for a total of 74 Northern Bay 38s, with most of these hulls and tops finished by other well-known boat builders. Together, their combined work earned the Northern Bay 38 a strong reputation among lobstermen, sportfishermen, and Downeast yacht enthusiasts.

Today, Perry Kuiper is building custom Northern Bay 38s in the Netherlands, six boats to date, powered by 400-800 HP engines and carrying full EU certification, including a September 2025 launch powered by an FPT 620 HP engine, combining Maine tradition with modern European composite technology and craftsmanship. Hull #7 is now in layup for the next Northern Bay 38 Euro-Build.

MORE INFORMATION ON ENGINE OPTIONS AND DISPLACEMENT WEIGHT

Displacement & Engine Range -- Northern Bay 38 Class

The 9.0-10.5 metric ton range (= 9.9-11.6 U.S. tons) represents a fully finished composite Northern Bay 38 with Corecell/Nidacore bulkheads and a solid fiberglass hull, including normal outfitting, tankage, gear, and machinery.

Typical breakdown by configuration:

9.0-9.3 t (= 9.9-10.2 U.S. tons)
Lighter sportfish builds with Cummins QSC 540 HP or FPT 570 HP; minimal interior, basic layout.

9.8-10.2 t (= 10.8-11.2 U.S. tons)
Cruiser configurations with more joinery, generator, air conditioning, and larger fuel/water capacity.

10.5 t + (= 11.6 + U.S. tons)
High-spec or heavier-engine builds such as Volvo D13 800 HP or MAN V8 800 HP, with additional systems and finish weight.
These powerplants add roughly 500-700 lb over a Cummins 540, and the associated gear, shafts, and exhaust typically increase displacement by another half ton.

Engine Displacement & Power Guidance

9-liter class: 500-620 HP -- ideal base engines (Cummins QSC, FPT N67)
11-liter class: 525-725 HP -- balanced cruiser/sportfish choice
13-liter class: up to 1000 HP -- upper-performance range
16-liter / CAT C18: up to 1200 HP -- oversized, beyond standard NB 38 requirements

The most suitable engines for the Northern Bay 38 are in the 9-13 liter range, including the MAN V8, all of which fit comfortably under the cabin sole. Info provided by Perry Kuiper, Northern Bay Boats.
