42' McGruer Racing Cruising Sloop - SOLD
BARTHOLOMEW is a graceful custom sloop built by McGruer & Co. in Clynder, Scotland. She is beautifully and professionally maintained by knowledgeable owners. A real thoroughbred in class and built to take the punishment of the North Sea. She was the Irish Sea champion in 1971 and 1972, Second in class in Wooden Boat's 1999 Eggemoggin Reach Regatta as well. Aboard, she's a sweet and airy space, very transparent; everywhere you look it's wonderfully evident that she is soundly built with artistic flair enjoined with every joint and curve. Her construction is double plank on frame with particularly heavy scantilings. Recent survey will be available.
Just launched, June 2008, varnished and fully commissioned. She's ready to cruise. Lead photo shows her on the mooring July 2008. Our European friends might consider cruising our spectacular coast for a season in preparation for a trans Atlantic home in the future.
The boat was built in 1971 for an Irishman who sold to a Scot in 1972 and was in use in the UK and France from 1972 to 1986. Current owner purchased in 1986, had her surveyed by Ian Nicolson whose children accompanied the owner trans Atlantic to bring her to the US.
Owners comments: She was built as "Tritsch Tratsch" for Dr. Otto Glasser and as part of the Irish Admirals Cup team was clearly very fast and successful, racing record available ....I bought her in 86 lying in the Morbihan. Ian Nicolson surveyed her. We took her to Falmouth for a full refit. Two of Ian's kids helped deliver her stateside. The boat had a fast uneventful transatlantic delivery here. Since then she has cruised Maine every summer with the odd club race. The Maine season is relatively short and the weather typically benign which accounts for the sails longevity combined with the incredible durability of Hood sailcloth of that vintage...
